Earthquake rocks parts of California during Storm

Southern California Shield From Hurricane Hilary; another natural disaster: a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.

Its epicenter was northwest Los Angeles and the quickly went viral on social media. Didn’t cause much damage and the hurricane has since been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone as well. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said more than 100 fire stations are looking for damage to buildings.

Ms. Bass said in a tweet that there were no initial reports of structural damage from the earthquake and no casualties. The Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones told NBC News it was “interesting” to witness an earthquake near Ojai and it was “the first time since 1932 that we’ve had high fives right there and even in the Ventura Basin.”

He warned that there could be more aftershocks in the coming days. The earthquake coincided with post-tropical cyclone Hilary, leaving many residents unsure of where to seek shelter. Another video captured at a supermarket showed items falling off shelves during the earthquake as a man ran out of the store with his daughter.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Service reported that the storm’s “sustained and historic” rainfall is expected to cause life-threatening or locally catastrophic flooding, as well as other problems such as mudslides and mudslides.
